The beng-beng challenge!
Could you eat 25 bars of beng-bengs in 10 minutes? That was the question our surf coach Tommy asked one of our guests last week.
Could you eat 25 bars of beng-bengs in 10 minutes? That was the question our surf coach Tommy asked one of our guests last week. Fredrik who of course couldn´t say no to this amazing opportunity took the bet. He was pretty sure it would be an easy thing to do but as the chocolate bars went down, at first one by one, later two by two he didn´t exactly look like he enjoyed it. He was a real trooper though and pulled it off just within the time limit.
But what´s not to like? After all, beng-bengs are, at is says on the box, made of wafer, caramel and also…wait for it…real chocolate...
Please try this at home and let us know how it went
Week two... by Simon Garrity
Surf Camp Lombok is situated down the south west of Lombok, they offer coaching for beginners (that'd be me) through to intermediate and advanced surfers. Prices are reasonable, especially for Indo, the price includes accommodation, food, coaching and use of all facilities. They have a Skate Bowl(!), a climbing wall, two stand up paddle boards, ping pong, and access to some incredible reef breaks to suit all levels.

Prices are reasonable, especially for Indo, the price includes accommodation, food, coaching and use of all facilities. They have a Skate Bowl(!), a climbing wall, two stand up paddle boards, ping pong, and access to some incredible reef breaks to suit all levels. The beginners coaching team is run by an English lifelong surfer, Philip Locke, but it's the Indo boys who really made the experience unforgettable (sounds dodgy, but bear with me). Dawn and sunset sessions start with stretching and pop up practice then you're taken to the waves by boat where the Indo coaches call you into the line-up and push you onto some incredible waves. It doesn't really matter how often you stack it because as long as your arms are still working you just paddle back and they'll put you on another one. So much more fun than trying to catch crumbling waves on a beach break. The learning curve is quite steep but before you know it you're standing up on every wave, only falling off a few, and even pulling a few turns into the right and left handers. The boys make sure you get no grief from from any of the experienced surfers there an the vibe is really chilled out, funny and easy going.
The camp nestles into the fishing village of Gerupuk and the staff run a voluntary foundation for the villagers, organising eye tests and glasses for the old folks, waste managements projects, the construction of a Community Centre, etc. Guests are invited to teach english at the local school, share any fun skills they have with the kids, a Swedish couple Chris and Tess taught all the girls to climb the wall one afternoon. Another swedish guy Jo showed some kids how to make jewellery and chains from ring pulls, by evening they'd collected hundreds of them and were ready to go. Really cool.
The local kids run around the camp through the day, they are awesome barefoot skateboarders, and the camp has adopted a couple of the waifs and strays. Keito, a deaf village kid had been kicked out by his family so turned up at the Camp, grabbed a broom and started sweeping
up. After a few days of this they gave him a Tshirt and now he's a feature of the place. He'll happily kick your ass at chess or cards, skates the bowl like a pro, awesome surfer and will drain your phone battery beating your top scores on all your game apps (grr).
I have to say the people at the camp were some of the nicest people I can ever remember meeting, and they taught me how to surf, too!
Can't recommend the place highly enough, if you decide to visit and you sort it, try to take along some decks an trucks for skating, badminton rackets, climbing shoes, anything like that for the foundation, I promise you won't regret it!

If you are looking for a boat trip, this is the one. For 10 days we will sail through some of the best and most consistent surf spots in the entire world.
If you are looking for a boat trip, this is the one. For 10 days we will sail through some of the best and most consistent surf spots in the entire world. Underwater photagrapher Christian Göran will be joining us with his underwater housing and his SLR camera to make this moment last forever. There will be a maximum of 10 guests, so contact us through email asap if you are interested.
On the 15th of April we set sail from the Banda Aceh, Indonesia’s most western province and head south along the coastline of Sumatra, ten days later we arrive in Lagundri, Nias. We spend the first days around a few unexplored locations along the Aceh coast, later on we head straight south towards Simeulue where we check a few unnamed spots and then continue to Tea-Bags outside SE Simeulue.
The next area to explore is the Banyak Islands with famous breaks such as Turtles and Treasure Island. Depending on the wind/swell we will cruise around this area for a few days to find the best conditions for the day. Finally we head further south to spend the last day at any of the offshore islands of Nias.
The boat is a traditional Phenisi ship built by Jon Wilkenson in 2007, this boat is made especially for surf charters and live aboard trips throughout South East Asia. The 75 footer has plenty of room for the 10 lucky guests on board.
Departure: Lhok Nga or the main port of Banda Aceh. Late night on the 14th or early morning on the 15th of April
Arrival: Lagundri Bay, Nias. Late night on the 24th of April.

GLASSES GIVE AWAY
So this will become a reoccurring event with more help from all of you kind donators. Many thanks to all of you who contributed to make this possible!
One of our projects this winter/spring has been to collect second hans glasses back in Sweden to bring to Lombok to distribute amongst the locals of Gerupuk. The respons was quite amazing and glasses were sent from all over Sweden, all with wishes of ending up in the hands of someone who could use them better.
Last Sunday, an optometrist from Praya came out to the camp to help out with the fitting, and we are very happy to say that it became quite a success. So this will become a reoucurring event with more help from all of you kind donators. Many thanks to all of you who contributed to make this possible!

Grand Opening Banyu Surfshop/ Vintage clothes store!
The Banyu Surfshop has been open for a while selling custom boards, wax etc. Yesterday we opened a new part of the store, an event that turned out to be far more popular than we had imagined
The Banyu Surfshop has been open for a while selling custom boards, wax etc. Yesterday we opened a new part of the store, an event that turned out to be far more popular than we had imagined…
Two of us working here at the camp realized we have far too much clothes never being used, and instead of just giving it away, why don’t try another angle; We will sell second hand/vintage clothing and the full profit goes directly to Surfcamp Lombok Foundation. Since we want both locals and visitors to have the opportunity to buy the prices are very reasonable, and as you can see yesterday was for sure the “locals day “.
In just a couple hours we sold for over 500 000Rupiah and the question we got was:
When will more clothes come??
So, friends, camp guests and visitors: if you come by here, feel free to donate your no longer needed clothes to the new Vintage Shop in Gerupuk village!
